One of the world’s leading fashion designers, Gianni Versace, died 24 years ago in 1997, and two more deaths have recently occurred at the same place. Gianni, along with his family, founded the world-famous Versace fashion empire.
When he passed away, it was discovered that serial killer Andrew Philip Cunanan was responsible for the murder of Gianni Versace. According to the second season of “American Crime Story,” the fashion designer was returning to his Villa Casa Casuarina Hotel home when he was killed.

GIANNI’S DEATH
He had taken a walk that morning walk and bought an Italian newspaper at News Café on July 15, 1997, when Cunanan, 27, allegedly fatally shot him at the back of the head outside the front gate of his Ocean Drive mansion.
At the time, the 50-year-old fashion designer had been with his partner, Antonio D'Amico, for 15 years. The star’s partner heard the shots and ran outside to see Gianni lying down on the stairs.
THE SUSPECT & HIS DEATH
Witnesses told the police that they saw a man walking down the street and turning into an alley. Cunanan was caught on hotel security footage, and police found clothing in a nearby garage that matched his description.
The initial speculation was that the fashion designer was killed in a professional hit, or perhaps it was mob-related. Then, eight days later, the murderer killed himself on a houseboat in North Miami Beach.
Cunanan was described as an interloper, a hustler, and pathological liar who fancied himself worthy of Gianni's world. His obsessions sadly turned deadly, and he died by suicide aboard a houseboat.
The boat docked along the Intracoastal Waterway was less than three miles away from the star’s house. It turned out that the killer shot himself with the same pistol he used to kill the designer and two other men.
OTHER VICTIMS & GIANNI’S DIAGNOSIS
Gianni became Cunanan’s fifth victim in three months. The suspect was already a wanted man in three states and had gone into hiding in Miami more than two months before murdering the famous designer.
Before his death, the fashion designer had returned to his company after leaving it for around two years. He spent some time away from the brand to go through treatment for a rare form of inner-ear cancer.
His sister, Donatella Versace, previously told “New York” magazine that her brother’s cancer had been cured six months before his death. And a few days before his death, Gianni presented his final collection at the Ritz Hotel in Paris.
VERSACE’S PERSONALITY
In a previous interview, “Vogue’s” editor-in-chief Anna Wintour described Gianni as a brilliant designer and marketer. Carla Bruni, a supermodel, and singer-songwriter recalled something about the designer.
She said the star had a knack for discovering and nurturing raw talent. He would take fragile young models and treat them like princesses and like a part of his family and world.
The fashion mogul was a workaholic, went to bed early, and cherished his long-term relationship with D'Amico. Sadly, the motive for the Versace brand creator’s death was never discovered.
TWO MORE DEATHS AT THE HOTEL
A day before the 24th anniversary of Gianni’s murder, Miami Beach police were called by housekeeping to the star’s former property after two deceased males were found. The bodies were found in one of the hotel rooms.
“E! News’ said the incident report revealed that the preliminary investigation said the deaths were ruled as an apparent double suicide. Both men had gunshot wounds to the head and were unresponsive.
