Popular TODAY weatherman, Al Roker, was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and will be undergoing surgery to have his prostate removed.

Roker announced his diagnosis on Friday's episode of TODAY, explaining that he made the announcement public to highlight that African American men are at greater risk of having prostate cancer.

The television personality explained that his diagnosis was met with mixed feelings, explaining that it was good the disease was detected early. He went on to tell fans that he hoped his diagnosis would educate people and help them learn to protect themselves from the disease.

He explained that the cancer was a little aggressive, so he would need some time to take care of himself. Roker is expected to undergo surgery next week at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where a doctor named Dr. Vincent Laudone will do the procedure.

Roker's diagnosis comes a few months after he and Deborah celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

Laudone, who was also on the show, discussed that the surgery was aimed to help Roker get back to his normal activities. He added that the television host's present lifestyle would aid his quick recovery after the procedure.

Speaking about the day he received the sad news, Roker explained that he was alone when he received the diagnosis and added that his wife, Deborah, was upset when she heard.

Roker's diagnosis comes a few months after he and Deborah celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. In celebration of the milestone, the couple paid sweet tributes to each other on social media.

Despite the diagnosis, there is no doubt that Roker will win the fight against cancer, and Deborah will be there for her husband through this difficult time.
