NOT SO HAPPY CHILDHOOD

As one of Olive and George Osmond's nine children, devout Mormons from Utah, Marie grew up surrounded by brothers. The older brothers formed a quartet that would prepare the way for the musical career of the other brothers.

At age three, Marie made her television debut, performing with her brothers on "The Andy Williams Show". Despite how glamorous it may seem when she wanted to go out and play she had to work, rehearse and record.

Everyone knows her for her cheerful, enthusiastic personality and her always present smile, however, it has been a lot of pressure for her to keep that image always positive. However, Marie talks about her childhood with her usual optimism and focuses on good memories.

PERSONAL IMAGE

Moving from anorexia to overeating, Osmond has struggled with her body image since she was a teenager. At that time she faced the production of the 'Donny & Marie' program, who said that she would lose weight or lose her job.

With this pressure, she lost over 20 pounds at once, which was dangerous to her health. She said she did everything from taking pills to lose weight, to starvation, and bulimia. Her relationship with the food was terrible. Fortunately, after the birth of her last son in 1999, she began to enjoy food.

Osmond was able to lose 45 pounds, with the help of a diet plan that she supports. She has confirmed that her family was vital at that stage when she was heaviest in her entire life and that they inspired her.

Her children confirmed their love and desire to have her healthy and strong to enjoy them and their grandchildren for many more years. Marie has strengthened inwardly thanks to the love of her family and was able to win the battle against the negative image she had of her body.

DEPRESSION

Marie followed in the footsteps of her parents and formed a large family with eight children. And although five of his children were adopted, she suffered from a form of postpartum depression (PPD) with everyone, something she left reflected in her book, Behind The Smile: My Journey Out of Postpartum Depression.

She received help when her PPD became unmanageable in 1999 with the arrival of her son Matthew. The situation reached the point that she even temporarily left her family. She put her baby with a babysitter and stayed in a hotel off the coast of California until her family convinced her to return home.

About that time, she said that depression is like a monster that imprisoned her making her cry, despair and want to abandon everything. She felt that something was very wrong with her and that even her family would be better off without her. She struggled with suicidal thoughts at the lowest point of depression.

Fortunately, she managed to realize that she couldn't wait any longer for help. Her intuition told her that it wasn't just blue and melancholy for having another baby, something more complex was happening.

Osmond became an advocate for mothers fighting postpartum depression, and in 2005 she spoke harshly against Tom Cruise because he attacked Brooke Shields when it was learned that she used antidepressants after the birth of her daughter.

DIVORCE

With the success of her cool “Donny & Marie” program, Marie married a Brigham Young University basketball player, Stephen Craig, and they quickly had their first child, Stephen James Craig. But the problems were swift, resulting in divorce after five years of union.

Shortly after their divorce, Marie married music producer Brian Blosil in 1986. They had two children of their own and adopted five more. However, this new marriage was not absent from problems, with separation and postpartum depression, after 20 years they finally divorced.

In a turn of life, Osmond met again her first husband Stephen Craig and surprisingly they remarried again in 2011. To date they continue together, demonstrating that they have been able to overcome the painful moments and that there are more things that unite them.

DEATH

Tragedy has surrounded Marie in recent years, hitting her hard. In 2007 when he was participating in the “Dancing With the Stars” program in California, his father died suddenly in Utah. Osmond went ahead with his participation in the show as a way to honor his father's memory.

Without having recovered from the duel for the death of his father, she had to face the greatest pain a human being can have, with the suicide of her 18-year-old son Michael. The young man had been treated since age 12 for problems with substance abuse, although the autopsy revealed no substances in his body.

On this occasion, Marie was in the middle of a series of presentations in Las Vegas with her brother Donny, that was suspended until she was able to strengthen herself enough to resume her professional commitments.

The tragedy struck again the life of the Osmond family in 2014, as her 7-year-old grand-niece, London Mortensen, died in an accident when the wall of a mobile trailer suddenly fell on her. The Mortensen family was in the process of moving to Utah to be closer to the Osmond clan.

CHARITY AND BUSINESS

Known by her smile and extraordinary attitude, Marie has shown resilience to the difficulties she has faced in a way that has always been strengthened from these crises.

In addition to her career in entertainment, Osmond develops a series of commercial activities, as well as charities. It has a line of collection dolls of fine porcelain named Marie Osmond.

She launched a line of craft products called Crafting With Marie. And she has found time to help others, as she is the co-founder of Children's Miracle Network, an organization that supports children's hospitals in North America.
