On Thursday morning, Harris County police responded to shots fired at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church. They later confirmed that a woman was dead and another one was critically wounded.
Later on the same day, it was revealed that a suspect was being investigated for the shooting that took place at the church parking lot in Cypress, Texas. Early on the following day, the Harris County Sheriff's Department tweeted that they'd caught up with a suspect.
Harris County Deputies responded to shots fired on 11507 Huffmeister Rd, Cypress. They arrived at the Christ The Redeemer Catholic Church near North Houston Road in northwest Harris County at around 7 p.m. on Thursday.
They found a woman, 66, who was shot dead and another woman, 31, was critically wounded at a church parking lot. Someone had fired a number of times at a vehicle that the two were in.
On Thursday night a news conference was held by the police. They revealed that they were looking for Arthur Edigin, 62, in connection with the shooting.
Authorities shared he was driving a white 2008 Suburban with a damaged right front quarter panel. The people targeted were Edigin's estranged wife and daughter.
The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston released a statement on the tragedy:
"Our prayers are with the victims and families affected by the tragic shooting this evening at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church. Officials with the Archdiocese and the parish community are cooperating with local authorities in their investigation."
On January 18, in the morning, the police revealed that they’d found the suspect in a hotel at 2424 West Sam Houston Parkway. The police along with a SWAT team arrived at the scene and tried to negotiate with Edigin.
At around 3: 15 p.m, authorities tweeted that they entered the suspect's hotel room and found him dead inside.
In a separate case on Tuesday, a suspect was shot and killed by Tempe police officers. Police responded to a suspicious vehicle call near 48th Street and Baseline Road just after 2:30 p.m. and when they arrived they allegedly found a teenager burglarizing a vehicle.
Police told the 14-year-old boy to get out of the car and he ran away with what appeared to be a handgun. An officer gave chase and "perceived a threat and fired his service weapon striking the suspect.”
The boy had CPR done on him and he was taken to a hospital where he pronounced dead. A man who said the teenager was breaking into his truck said he had a fake gun in his truck.
It seems the police mistook the man’s replica airsoft gun as a real one.
