reports that his daughter’s birth was a total game-changer for Common, whose real name is Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr. When Common released “One Day It’ll All Make Sense,” the album was heavily influenced by the recent knowledge that he would soon be a father.
The reality that he would soon welcome a child into the world had a significant spiritual and mental effect on Common and helped him grow musically while becoming more responsible as an artist.
The project ’s hit single, “Retrospect For Life” talks about abortion and birth from a man’s point of view and was dedicated to his daughter.
The “Southside” rapper and Jones named their daughter Omoye Assata Lynn, and in his 2011 memoir, Common explained the meaning of the chosen moniker.
“We named her Omoye Assata Lynn. Omoye means ‘Blessed Baby’ because that’s what she was to us. Assata was for Assata Shakur because our daughter was destined to become a fighter, even a revolutionary.”
During a 2016 guest co-host stint on “Live With Kelly and Ryan,” Common, 46, told Kelly Ripa that his daughter isn’t really into his music. “I mean, she likes some of the music, but she’s really honest about some of my music,” he said, adding:
“She’ll say ‘no, that’s not good’ or ‘you could do better than that’ or ‘you’re not as good as Chance the Rapper.’”
Common also said his daughter is a fan of Beyoncé.
But beyond being a dedicated father, the “Glory” hitmaker is also a disciplined health and fitness enthusiast.
Common, who used to eat vegan but now embraces a pescatarian diet, opened up to Men’s Journal about his routine.
The “Selma” actor said he works out four days a week, and sometimes five. He also said of his food:
“I eat seafood. …I like different cuisines. I like Mexican food. Soul food is my favorite. Then I have my little cookies. …I have to treat myself because I don’t want to live not enjoying certain aspects of life. I eat this way because it’s my lifestyle. … I’m also not drinking as much.”
On the personal side, Common has been romantically linked with several women, including the latest, lawyer and political analyst, Angela Rye. News of their breakup made headlines earlier in March and Rye said in a statement:
“We have and will always be friends. He is an amazing human being, and I’m a much better person because he’s a part of my life. May we all keep loving and living.”
